When configuring high-pressure plunger pumps for industrial cleaning or agricultural spraying, selecting the correct water seal profile is critical for maintaining volumetric efficiency and preventing premature leaks. The two most widely utilized designs in the industry are the U-Type (such as W1/W2 profiles) and the V-Type (such as the DM series) water seals. While both serve the fundamental purpose of containing pressurized fluids, their structural engineering and ideal application environments differ significantly.
U-Type water seals are characterized by their single, asymmetric lip design that forms a "U" shape. This geometric configuration is highly favored for its exceptional dynamic sealing capabilities combined with a relatively low coefficient of friction. When fluid pressure increases inside the pump cylinder, the pressure physically pushes the flexible lips outward against the plunger and the cylinder wall, creating a tight seal. Because they generate less friction heat, U-Type seals are generally the preferred choice for high-speed plunger pumps operating under moderate to high pressures, ensuring smooth operation with minimal power loss.
Conversely, V-Type water seals, often referred to as V-rings or Vee packing, utilize a robust, multi-lip design. Instead of relying on a single point of contact, V-Type seals feature several stacked sealing edges. This robust construction provides superior structural stability and extreme extrusion resistance, making them the ultimate choice for heavy-duty applications characterized by massive pressure spikes, intense mechanical vibrations, and harsher pumping media. While V-Type seals generate slightly more friction than U-Cups, their unmatched durability makes them indispensable for extreme industrial pressure washers and heavy oilfield pumping equipment. At TRS Seals, our engineering team assists global clients in analyzing their specific pump RPM, pressure ratings, and operating temperatures to custom-manufacture the precise seal profile required for maximum longevity.
