Solutions: Preventing Seal Extrusion in Heavy-Duty Mud Pumps with Advanced ZP Piston Seals
A heavy industrial construction company in Southeast Asia was operating massive mud pumps for piling projects. The hydraulic cylinders in these pumps faced severe pressure fluctuations and mechanical shocks. These pressure spikes were forcing the soft rubber of standard Piston Cups to extrude into the metal clearance gaps, leading to torn sealing lips, rapid pressure loss, and catastrophic cylinder failure. Extrusion requires a structural defense, so TRS Seals upgraded the equipment using our specialized ZP Piston Seals paired with anti-extrusion Gel Rings. The ZP profile features a robust, high-durometer polyurethane/fabric composite that offers incredible shear strength. Additionally, the geometric design allows the seal lips to flare and tighten against the cylinder wall precisely when pressure increases, without being pushed into the clearance gaps. The advanced ZP Piston Seals completely eliminated the gap extrusion issue. The mud pumps achieved a stable, consistent hydraulic pressure output, even under severe shock loads. The construction company reported a significant decrease in hydraulic fluid consumption and greatly improved equipment reliability across their challenging worksites.
