Innovation Release: High-Pressure Union Seal Rings with Integrated Metal Anti-Extrusion Backups
Securing fluid connections in modern oil and gas operations is a matter of critical safety and environmental protection. Hammer unions and high-pressure flowline equipment routinely handle abrasive mud, cement slurries, and fracturing fluids under immense, fluctuating pressure spikes that can easily exceed 15,000 PSI. To provide an absolute, fail-safe sealing solution for these extreme manifold environments, TRS Seals has expanded our oilfield product portfolio with the release of our new High-Pressure Union Seal Rings featuring integrated metallic anti-extrusion backups. A standard elastomer union seal, while effective under constant, moderate pressure, is highly vulnerable to "gap extrusion" during sudden, violent shock loads. The immense fluid pressure forces the soft rubber to physically flow and extrude into the microscopic metal clearance of the union joint, swiftly shredding the seal. Our innovative design eliminates this failure mode by permanently molding a rigid, precision-machined backup ring—available in high-tensile Brass or corrosion-resistant Stainless Steel—directly into the heel of the elastomer seal. When a massive pressure spike occurs, the metal backup ring bridges the clearance gap completely, providing an impenetrable wall that protects the primary sealing rubber. Available in sour-gas resistant (H2S) HNBR and high-temperature FKM compounds, these new metallic-backed Union Seal Rings represent the pinnacle of flowline safety and durability.
